Car crash injures 12 in Maryland

At least 12 people were injured in an accident involving multiple vehicles in Montgomery County on April 3. Four of the injured were children.

According to authorities, the incident took place on the northbound side of Interstate 270, between Routes 121 and 109 in the evening hours. The accident, which involved at least five vehicles, left one person trapped in a car and who had to be extricated by rescue workers. One woman suffered serious injuries. Seven other people, including the four children, were taken to various hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police continue to investigate the accident, which left all lanes but one blocked while the emergency responders were on the scene. It is unknown what caused the crash. In similar car crashes, however, factors such as speeding, reckless or distracted driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and weather and road conditions have played a role. With accidents involving multiple vehicles, more than one driver might be found responsible.

In this type of case, the victims might await the result of the police investigation and to see what charges are filed, if any. The attorneys for people who have been injured may also review the testimony of eyewitnesses and see if any video footage of the multi-car collision exists in order to pinpoint responsibility for the crash. In a chain collision, there could be other causes besides an impaired, distracted or otherwise negligent driver. In some cases, a brake failure could be why one car hit another from behind, which could mean that there was a defective auto part for which the manufacturer should bear liability.
