Whiplash Injuries
If you’re ever in an auto accident, count yourself lucky to walk away without injury. You might want to wait a few days, however, to be absolutely sure you’re injury free. The problem: whiplash, a painful condition that sometimes does not appear for several days.
According to the University of Maryland, whiplash occurs when a rapid movement of the head injures the soft tissue around the neck. This usually happens because of a sudden stop, such as slamming a car’s brakes. In fact, auto accidents are the most common cause of whiplash. The condition sometimes appears immediately, but whiplash symptoms may not occur for several days after an auto accident. Even mild cases of whiplash cause pain; more severe cases can lead to numbness in your arms, limit your activities and bring continuing pain and stiffness. In some cases, whiplash can become a chronic condition that limits the accident victim’s activities for months or years.
Doctors often have a hard time diagnosing whiplash because it does not show up on X-rays or other medical imaging equipment. The most common reason for making the diagnosis is the lack of any other obvious injury. This fact can make insurance companies skeptical, and reluctant to pay auto accident claims related to it. Regardless of this skepticism, however, whiplash is a very real, and very painful injury.
If you need to pursue a claim against an insurance company regarding whiplash, you’re well advised to seek the guidance of an experienced attorney. In Maryland, your attorney can help you present your auto accident claim, gather medical reports and other evidence regarding your injury, and negotiate with the insurance company. If you’re not satisfied with the insurer’s response, your attorney can help you appeal, coordinate a complaint through the Maryland Insurance Administration, and advise you on your other legal options.
Your attorney may also advise you on your worker’s compensation or other disability rights you may have due to a case of whiplash.
Treatment for whiplash can include pain relievers, muscle relaxants, special medical collars, and avoiding activities that cause pain. In Maryland, your attorney can help you receive any compensation you have a right to, due to your pain and limited activity.
If you have to live with a case of whiplash, you have rights under Maryland law. Hiring a qualified attorney who specializes in auto accident claims can help you receive the compensation you deserve due to financial and personal consequences of whiplash.
