Route 50 sees 3rd deadly motor vehicle accident in just weeks

Some stretches of road here in Maryland see more crashes than others do. For some reason, there seems to be an increase in wrong-way crashes on a certain stretch of Route 50. Two people died in the most recent motor vehicle accident, which took place on a Wednesday morning.

It was about 2 a.m. when troopers with the Maryland State Police responded to a call to locate a vehicle heading east in Route 50's westbound lanes. By the time a trooper caught up to the vehicle, it had already slammed into another car. The impact caused a third vehicle to strike the westbound vehicle as it spun out of control.

The drivers of the first and second vehicles both suffered fatal injuries in the impact. The driver and passenger in the third vehicle survived. They required treatment at a hospital in the area, but were then released.

Investigators with the Maryland State Police Crash Team found alcohol containers in the wrong-way driver's vehicle, so alcohol may have contributed to the crash. Speed has been ruled out, however. It may take some time to determine how and why the woman ended up driving on the wrong side of the road.

The results of the official investigation could provide a starting point for the family of the deceased victim. Providing the appropriate evidence to the court that establishes negligence on the part of the other driver could result in the consideration of an award of damages. A monetary judgment from the court could help the family obtain restitution for the financial losses associated with this tragic motor vehicle accident.
