Anyone who is walking is at risk for a pedestrian accident

Walking is a great form of exercise for most Maryland residents. Unfortunately, it can also be dangerous. Although most people take great care to look both ways before crossing the street and stick to well-lit areas, they are simply no match for large motor vehicles. Because of this, virtually anyone can be at risk for a pedestrian accident.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, pedestrians are the most susceptible group on the road. This includes children in strollers and individuals who use wheelchairs. On average, approximately one pedestrian is killed every 66 minutes, and around 104,000 seek treatment in emergency departments for every year.

Although all pedestrians are at risk for related injuries, some groups face a slightly higher chance of harm than others. Males, for instance, suffer fatal injuries more frequently than females. People between the ages of 15-29 are most likely to receive treatment for pedestrian injuries in emergency rooms. In general, the likelihood of injuries being fatal rises with age, with the exception of children 14 or younger, who are the most likely to die if struck by a motor vehicle.

Despite the health, financial and environment benefits of ditching the vehicle for a pair of walking shoes, there is no denying the dangers of a pedestrian accident. When drivers behave negligently and strike pedestrians, the impact is often devastating and long-lasting. Maryland victims often struggle with medical bills, lost wages and emotional trauma on top of physical injuries. Although this type of situation can feel hopeless, many victims successfully achieve just compensation through the careful actions of a personal injury suit.
