We’re pleased to announce we’ve chosen a winner.
Congratulations to Julia Veeser of Michigan!
Julia is studying law at Chicago-Kent College of Law.
This was the essay topic:
If you could ask a person one question–alive or dead–and receive a 100% honest answer, what would that question be and why?
Here is Julia’s winning essay:
Growing up, I had always been fascinated with what makes a person tick. What intrinsic motivation is needed to lead to the decisions one has made or will make in the future. If I could ask one person any question in the world and receive a one hundred percent truthful answer I would look to Jackie Kennedy, otherwise known as Jackie O, to understand her relationship with the late and great JKF as well as her relationship with the public. In addition to my love of understanding people’s thought processes, I have always exceled in and sought out information on history of the United States. If I could pick the brain of Jackie O and specifically ask her one question I would love to understand how the former first lady was able to do so much in her lifetime in the public eye while experiencing so much hurt and loss and eventually transforming into the icon known today?
Regarded as of America’s favorite first ladies, Jackie O was a successful style and cultural icon as well as a doting mother and wife. I am very curious how Jackie was able to so achieve this status and eventually become a household name to so many in the 21st century. While so many first ladies have come and gone without much notice, Jackie Kennedy’s name is still one you hear in the style of clothing people wear, the elegance, and the overall feminine but strong presence. Jackie was able to hold her head high as her husband was infamously accused of having an affair with sex symbol Marilyn Monroe and ultimately was able to pivot her life after she witnessed her husband’s assassination on November 22, 1963.
I would like to understand how Jackie O was able to recover so beautifully and with so much hope and dignity. She played the role of a complicit wife, even wearing the pink Chanel suit JFK picked out for her the day of his assassination. What was Jackie’s motivation? How was she able to recover and turn into the icon that is she is today? There are so many things I would like to know, like to better understand, and even praise her on. As a little girl my grandmother used to tell me “you want to be like Jackie O when you grow up. Beautiful, strong, poised.” My grandmother gave me a small set of plastic pearls when I was young to make me feel as beautiful and the photos displayed of Jackie O in history books.
Therefore, if I were given just one question to one individual, dead or alive, I would love to ask Jackie O how she was able to do so much in her life even after all of the tragedy and hurt she suffered. To be able to carry oneself with such respect is a skill I hope to have in my own future, as I always think back to my grandmother’s words on the strong and beautiful Jackie O.
We’re happy to announce that we’ll be continuing the scholarship in 2021 and beyond. For more information on the next entry period which will be for Fall 2021, please see our law firm’s scholarship page. Congratulations again, Julia! May all your dreams come true.
