Recently we discussed permanent disability benefits available under the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Act.
Now let’s discuss temporary disability benefits. There are two types:
- Temporary total disability (TTD)
- Temporary partial disability (TPD)
Temporary total disability benefits are available to employees who have suffered a disabling, work-related injury that prevents them from working at all. If the disability lasts for 14 days or less, then compensation for medical services and medicine can be provided for the first three days of disablement, and wage compensation can commence after that.
If temporary total disability lasts longer than 14 days, then TTD compensation can start from the date of the disability.
In terms of wage compensation, the Maryland Workers’ Compensation Commission states that an employee can receive TTD payments equal to “two-thirds of the average weekly wage on the covered employee, up to a maximum of the average Maryland weekly wage.” You can read more about the calculation of the Maryland weekly wage at the commission’s website.
Temporary partial disability benefits are available to injured workers who are disabled but not totally. With TPD benefits, injured workers receive a percentage of their average weekly wages while performing part-time or limited work duties for reduced pay. These benefits are generally available on a temporary basis while the injured worker recovers.
